Who Let the Gods Out?

by Maz Evans

Review

This is yet another book that my class and I LOVED

Who Let the Gods Out? is a fun adventure book, filled with interesting character and absolutely brilliant humour. Maz Evans writes in an extremely "easy-read" style and includes humour that both adults and children can appreciate. We loved exploring Maz's style in lessons and plenty of us have since been hooked on the rest of the Who Let the Gods Out? series!

Shockingly, I immediately took a liking to the characters that the reader is supposed to dislike - Mrs Porshley Plum and Mr Boil. I suppose this may be because of the *chef's kiss* humour associated with both of these characters, but either way I found myself laughing at loud at certain points of the book.

In terms of the storyline, I really enjoyed the fun, upbeat storytelling which was very fun to read, however I also appreciated how Maz Evans provides an insight into the home life of a child caring for their parent. In this book, Elliot has a difficult time at school but an even trickier time at home where he lives with his mum who is showing signs of Dementia. Afraid of seeking help and having his mum taken away, Elliot takes matters into his own hands and does everything he can to save his mum and their farm.

Overall, I think this books is an extremely fun and easy read. It would be a fantastic book to share with and adult or child and would (hopefully) have everyone chuckling away throughout the book.

Overview

Elliot Hooper is a young boy with a big secret. He spends most of his time looking after his mum and the farm house and keeping them both safe from their ghastly neighbour Mrs Porshley Plum. As time passes, and his mum's illness continues to worsen, Elliot realises that his neighbour isn't there to lend a hand: she wants to take his home... and quick!

One mysterious night, a blazing star smashes into Elliot's cow shed. However, upon further inspection Elliot finds that the only thing left is a rather unusual girl in what appears to be Greek fancy dress. He soon discovers that things are not as they seem and the young girl Virgo - a member of the Zodiac Council of Elysium - is on a mission to find an ancient (and dangerous) prisoner.

Together, they set off to find this mysterious criminal, but things soon take a turn for the worse when they realise that an infamous Demon of Greek mythology is on the loose and looking to cause mayhem. Is the universe really in grave danger?  Or can they save they day before anyone else even notices?
