The Completely Chaotic Christmas of Lottie Brooks

by Katie Kirby

Review

This was the first of the Lottie Brooks series that I read (reading books out of order... how dare you, Miss C!) and I enjoyed every second of it. I vaguely remember chuckling out loud a number of times, resulting in some pretty strange looks from my family.

Like the other books in the series, The Completely Chaotic Christmas of Lottie Brooks is a breath of fresh air and absolute gem of a book. Even as an adult, I loved reading from the perspective of a tween girl and thoroughly enjoyed sharing all of her most embarrassing moments - some of which are a little too familiar. Katie Kirby writes in a very casual and simple style, but somehow manages to pack Lottie's diaries full of drama and humour.

I remember my class being absolutely hooked when I read out an extract from this book (the scene of the nativity... you are missing out if you don't know what I am talking about!) and from that moment, a kind of "Lottie Brooks Fan Club" formed and never stopped growing. Some of us even got to meet Katie Kirby and get copies of our books signed at a local author event (eeeek!).

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys witnessing embarrassing and awkward moments, sarcastic comments and secondary school drama. It is also an excellent way to introduce the complications of growing older, including going through puberty, falling in love and working out exactly who you are and who you want to be.

Overview

It's nearly Christmas and Lottie is desperate for Father Christmas to fix all of her problems. This includes 1. getting a new brother, 2. 200 KitKat Chunkies and 3. a boyfriend! This may all seem very straight forward but unfortunately for Lottie, things very rarely are. While the rest of her family gear up for Christmas celebrations, Lottie stumbles from one embarrassing moment to another... but nothing can prepare her for what Christmas day will bring!
